F.A.Q.

Below we will answer as many questions as we can. Questions asked will be posted so others can share the answers and information.

  1. What does it cost to build the router ? For ALL the components of the machine, some special tools, and a computer, monitor and mistakes we spent aover $ 8000 . This also included our software, and CAM software. These were all new components. You can built it for thousands less if you spend the time to shop places like EBAY, and simply look around. I know of that a recent builder has it for about 5,000.

  2. Do you offer a kit ? All of the Aluminum is offered as a 'kit' pre cut to size. Then you simply need to drill and tap it, and have a few components machined. I do not kit the parts. The supplier I used has a list and cuts all the aluminum to a tolerance of .005". This is better than you will ever do in a home shop.

  3. What is the accuracy of the Cad Cut ? My machine will return to home within .002 (2/1000) or better every time. When cutting accuracy is 5/1000" under load if its moderate - that's one half of one - one hundredth of an inch.... look at a caliper or ruler with that small of graduations.... its accurate. So accuracy is dependant on speed / load. If you need VERY accurate go a little slower - if your cutting foam - let it rip at over 200 IPM.

  4. Can the machine cut aluminum ? Yes, with the proper RPMs, and bit, and feed speed.... but its not a Mill and not recommended..... but will do light duty cutting and shaping of aluminum but it's main uses are wood, foam, plastic cutting.....

  5. How heavy is the machine ? The machine weighs about 1100 pounds

  6. Can I use THK rails ?  Yes - no problem. Just be sure they are top mount - That is the mounting screws go in from the top of the rail and not under. You CAN use the others but it is more difficult to mount those type on the X axis. The Y axis is preferred to have rails that mount from under.

  7. Can I use servo motors ?  Yes, servos will work fine however the plans are based on stepper motors..

  8. Can you help me modify the machine to make it longer ?  I can give some advise, however given the low cost of the plans I cannot provide re-design services but I will  make suggestions and help you as best i can.

  9. Can I use steel pipe for the frame ?  I would not suggest it. The cost of the steel is minimal, I would use the 2" square tube steel.

  10. Can the machine cut 1" plywood.  Yes - I have done so easily. When I cut hardwood I cut in multi passes - usually 1/4 - 1/2" at a time simply so I go vibrate everything to death , and its a wear issue also.

  11. Can I use a different control system than Ability Systems ?  Yes - no problem at all but I suggest you talk to Ability Systems before deciding not to use it.

  12. Can I use used parts ?  Yes

  13. Can I make it bigger ? Yes you can, but you will need to increase the frame members thickness and diameter.

  14. Can I make the 'Z' height greater ?  This is a tricky one. You can easily BUT you need to beef up the gantry quite a bit.... its a long story. You can do it but expect to spend 1000+ more to do so....

  15. Can I change the size ? - Yes this is no problem.
